The cost of stress

Stress is the biggest source of illness and work related absence. Figures published by the CBI show sickness absence costs UK businesses approximately £533 per annum for every employee.

The Confederation of British Industry estimates businesses lost £102 billion in 1998 through lost productivity caused by stress.

The Health and Safety Executive suggest that 67 million working days are lost each year and 60% are stress related.

1 in 5 workers suffers high levels of stress at work (HSE)

The International Stress Management Association UK found stress lowers job satisfaction (65%) and lowers productivity (41%).

TUC figures show in 1999, 519 employees made claims, in 2000, 6,400 made claims for stress in the workplace.
